The Miller Hull Partnership and Public: Architecture + Communication have worked hard to develop a design concept for the New Powell River Public Library. The design incorporates input and ideas provided by the Powell River community at two public design meetings in December 2011 and February 2012.
On Monday, March 26th, please join us to view this preliminary design. At the Open House, the architects will be available to answer your questions related to the design, and provide more detail about how your new library might look and function.
Your ideas and opinions matter!

The following feedback from a Powell River resident is a representative example of concerns regarding project costs:
“Like many people in the Powell River area I have followed the debate on the New Library project with considerable interest. I have spoken to friends about it and written letters to the city council in an effort to become educated on this matter. Many times I have been referred to the library website to find answers to my questions and I must say that the information I have read to date is extremely short on facts. I have particular concerns about funding for the project and nowhere is a projected cost listed, or a realistic idea how much money could be available as grants. I realize that you are trying to promote this project to the people of PR but really it will be difficult to convince fence sitters like myself to come on board when there is no idea what this is going to cost. No matter how much people believe that libraries are important, myself included, cost is important too. By being vague about the costs people are inclined to think that the promoters of the project have something to hide. Prove me wrong and lets hear some facts not fluff.”

On February 14, around 240 Powell River residents participated in a Community Design Workshop to provide further input into the design of the New Powell River Public Library. Their contribution will shape the design as the architects develop it further so that the proposed library will reflect community needs.
Participants provided feedback on three design concepts. Through a presentation by the Architects and a series of interactive design exercises with smaller groups, the design features were further explored and documented. Participants were asked to comment on the features in each of the design concepts rather than to pick any one concept over another. All of those comments will be used to inform the creation of a new preferred design concept to be shown to the community in late March.
Design Concept A:
This one story building faces west and is oriented along a reconfigured trail connecting Willingdon Beach to Abbotsford Street. The vehicle entrance and parking is at the north end of the site and the main library entry faces the trail and waterfront at the north end of the building. The south part of the site would be reserved for possible future use. An expressive heavy timber roof structure provides rain protection to trail users and shades the western building face from the afternoon sun. Inside the building, the heavy timber roof encloses one large flexible space and undulates to create north facing skylights that capture scarce winter light.
